Interviewee Biography/Photo

Dr. Sara Díaz (she/her) was a faculty member (currently department chair, 2023) in Women's and Gender Studies (renamed Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies 2023) who helped support and guide the process of the early development of the CRES department. She teaches courses on gender, race, and sexuality in the US, feminism and science, and women and the environment. Her research focuses on the complex relationships between science, gender, race, and the politics of human difference. Dr. Díaz’ scholarship builds on U.S. third world feminist theories and employs feminist cultural studies methods to examine the intellectual survival strategies used by women of color scientists. Her other scholarly interests include gender, race and twentieth-century science; 20th Century US history, feminist research ethics; feminist epistemologies; feminist environmental justice; feminist pedagogy, and mixed race studies.

In this interview, she discusses her role and the role of her department and other faculty in supporting the development of the CRES department before faculty were hired. In particular, she highlights the interactions between faculty, students, and alumni.
